Faolan Face Up

faceplatesSo I’ve been working every single moment I have free to get my dolls ready. I didn’t take progress pictures of this face up, but I think it has some improvements over the one I did to Kitty, my Supia Rosy. I hope I get better and better so one day I can re do them all and be really happy with my dolls. But for now these face ups will do.

I tried a very natural face up for Faolan, this is the first time I paint a male sculpt.

I put some purple under his eyes, it doesn’t look purple at all (even though I put lots of purple layers), it was just to give it a more natural color, since he’s very pale (as I am) and it tends to look purple/greenish there.

faolan1The green eyes in this picture are the ones I got for him. Somehow they leave a little gap on the side, but so do the 14mm. so it’s not about the size, it’s probably the shape. I also tried a greyish pair of eyes (as seen in other pictures), but I think they are too big for him.

I dislike the wig I have, so after I edited these pictures I bought a fur one, I hope it will work better. Since it won’t get here soon, there won’t be much photos of Faolan in the meantime.

faolanI also decided to stop posting one photography each friday until I finish face ups, since I don’t have much space left to do anything really (taking the dolls boxes out of the closet is really hard with the set up I did for my face up table).

I’ve been thinking about buying new heads so I can practice, but I don’t know. I really like doing face ups and see how it comes to “live” with each layer of color. And also, I would improve much faster with more heads. Thank you!

    It looks good!

Another alternative to buying actual practise heads is offering free face-ups (or low-cost, like cost of materials) to local hobbyists. I did around half-a-dozen free face-ups until I got confident enough to charge a very minimal fee for them. But I got lots of experience doing different styles, colour-schemes and expressions.

Thank you!!! I thought about that too, but I’m not sure I’m at a level where I’m confident to offer it as a service, even if it’s free. But I guess I could try that too 🙂

I think you are definitely at the free-faceup-stage (at least). You are using the right materials and your blushing looks very smooth. You also have a sense of where to use different shades of colours (like the inner eye corner, some forget to blush that altogether, and how you described blushing the lower lid for a natural male faceup).

When I get back into taking comissions, I ‘have to’ raise prices actually, as I found out that my local competition charges more for face-ups that are lower quality than mine. Me too, I have been very strict with my own quality control, not offering face-ups for free before they were decent, then not taking money until I would have paid for the results myself and now not raising prices before since I wanted to build up a better portfolio. Of course we want to offer the very best, but you shouldn’t sell yourself too short. So definitely think about (especially once you get your heads painted for more recent practise, so you can get ‘into the flow’) offering face-ups for others.

Thanks! I’m still not entirely conviced about his face up, the eyebrows should be longer and I can’t point out exactly what else I don’t like to be honest XD!! I hope I can figure it out soon, so I can do a better job next time 😀
